Jamon Thomas

Jamon is a microbiologist and aspiring medical practitioner from the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois. He is a recent graduate of Howard University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry. During his time at Howard, Jamon was a member of the Howard Gospel Choir and Howard University’s CASCADE LGBTQ activism club. He also served as the membership chair of the Beta Kappa Chi National Scientific Honors Society where he cultivated his love for scientific inquiry and research.

Jamon is now a Fulbright fellow doing research at the Ludwik Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław. Under the direction of Dr. Ryszard Miedzybrodski, Jamon will be researching antibiotic-synergy methods against vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VREs). This research will aid in lowering the cost and toxicity conventional antibiotics pose to individuals living with bacterial infections; thereby, providing substantial contributions to the fields of medicine and infectious disease prevention.

Alongside his research in Poland, Jamon plans to become involved with the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights to assist in Asylum Seeking Process policy as well as the American Corners – Wrocław headquarters. Outside of his research and volunteer work in Wrocław, Jamon plans to explore Poland and all of its surrounding countries. As a fashion enthusiast, he is excited to study European fashion and looks forward to enhancing his wardrobe. Jamon is very grateful for this opportunity to conduct research under the tutelage of such world renowned faculty. After his Fulbright experience in June 2020, Jamon hopes to enter medical school.

Jamon jest mikrobiologiem, który aspiruje do zawodu lekarza. Pochodzi z „Wietrznego Miasta” Chicago w stanie Illinois. Jest świeżym absolwentem Howard University, który ukończył z tytułem licencjackim z biologii i chemii. W trakcie studiów był członkiem uczelnianego chóru gospel oraz klubu CASCADE LGBTQ. Był również przewodniczącym honorowego bractwa Beta Kappa Chi National Scientific Honors Society, w którym pielęgnował swoje umiłowanie dociekań i badań naukowych.

Jamon odbywa obecnie stypendium Fulbrighta w Instytucie Immunologii i Terapii Doświadczalnej im. Ludwika Hirszfelda Polskiej Akademii Nauk we Wrocławiu. Pod opieką dr Ryszarda Miedzybrodskiego Jamon prowadzi badania nad metodami łączenia antybiotyków w walce ze szczepami bakterii VRE (Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus). Badania pomogą obniżyć koszt i toksyczność konwencjonalnych antybiotyków stosowanych u pacjentów z infekcjami bakteryjnymi, przyczyniając się znacznie do postępu w różnych dziedzinach medycyny i prewencji chorób zakaźnych.

W Polsce, oprócz badań naukowych, Jamon planuje zaangażować się w działania Helsinskiej Fundacji Praw Człowieka związane z polityką azylową oraz American Corner we Wrocławiu. Ponadto chce podróżować po Polsce i krajach sąsiednich. Jako miłośnik mody z przyjemnością pozna europejskie trendy modowe. Jamon jest wdzięczny za możliwość prowadzenia badań pod auspicjami placówki naukowej o światowej renomie. Po zakończeniu stypendium w czerwcu 2020 r. Jamon ma nadzieję podjąć studia medyczne.
